ACL Tear
Signs and Symptoms:
- Pain and swelling throughout the knee.
- Hearing a pop at the time of injury.
- Feelings of instability in the knee.
- Some loss of mobility/Range of Motion.
Injury Description:
- The ACL is a ligament deep inside the knee and stabilizes the forward motion of the tibia on the femur.
- This injury usually occurs when there is a blow to the lower leg while the foot is planted or when at quick cut is made and the foot doesn’t pivot as expected.
What Can I Do?
- Early physical therapy treatment significantly speeds recovery to allow for a quicker return to full activity.
- Acutely, rest and medication for the pain and inflammation.
- Application of ice following activity will help decrease inflammation. The ice pack should be applied for 10 to 15 minutes at a time..
- Gradual movement to tolerance to improve Range of Motion.
- If symptoms persist consult your physician, surgery may be necessary.
